Belsize Road in Camden after a burst water main flooded the London street, on December 17, 2022.

Dozens of British citizens have been evacuated from their homes in north London after two water mains burst in a main street, leaving thousands of people without water.

The burst water mains caused a flooding to a depth of half a meter in a residential road in Camden town on Saturday morning, affecting more than 100 properties.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were dispatched to the area and more than 20 people, including children, were moved to safety following the immense flooding.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Williams, who was at the scene, British said: “This is a ‘significant flooding’ that has affected around 100 properties and left thousands without water.”

“Shift water rescue crews used boats to move around 20 people to upper floors of properties. Three adults and a child were evacuated to a place of safe haven,” Williams said.

According to the LFB, firefighters and aiding crew would remain at the scene throughout the afternoon, while significant road closures were in place.

The LFB also said one main had been isolated but a smaller main was still leaking. Meanwhile, the residents are advised to avoid the area.

“We are moaning about having no water but there are people whose flats are flooded,” a resident near the area said.

“Now there’s nothing come out of the taps at all. They’re bone dry,” she complained.

In a statement after the incident, Thames Water, UK’s largest private utility company responsible for the public water supply, apologized for the lack of water and the disruption.

“We’re really sorry for the flooding and distress this has caused, as well as the impact on local water supplies,” the statement reads.
