Brunei’s polo-playing Prince Abdul Mateen, one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors married his commoner fiancée Yang Mulia Anisha Rosnah on Thursday as part of an extravagant 10-day celebration in the oil-rich sultanate

A mosque with a gilded dome in the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan will host the Islamic marriage ceremony between the 32-year-old prince and Yang Mulia Anisha Rosnah, 29.

Mateen is relatively low on the succession hierarchy and the tenth child of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the longest-reigning monarch and former richest man on Earth.

His fiancée, who happens to be the granddaughter of a prominent advisor to his father, is said to co-own a travel agency and run a fashion label.

The grandiose parade and sparkling ceremony in the 1,788-room castle on Sunday mark the pinnacle of the royal wedding festivities.

Political figures and members of international nobility are anticipated to be on the guest list.

“It’s like a fairytale,” university student Syahida Wafa Mohamed Shah, 22, told AFP on Wednesday where the marriage will be solemnised near the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.

When the pair passes by in a royal carriage on Sunday, a large number of Bruneians are expected to line the streets for the procession.

“It’s like something from a movie,” said Nazatul Izzati Saifulrizal, 19.
