In yet another hostile measure, the Council of the European Union has prolonged the restrictive measures against Iran over claims of Iranian military support for Russia in Ukraine.

In a press release on Monday, the European Council said it has extended the restrictive measures until July 27, 2025.

It also claimed Iran has been providing military support to the armed groups and entities in West Asia and the Red Sea region.

“Existing restrictive measures will continue to be reviewed annually. Currently, the sanctions regime applies to 12 persons and nine entities.”

The Council defines the overall political direction and priorities of the European Union.

Those targeted will be subject to an asset freeze and travel ban to the European Union. Additionally, the provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to or for the benefit of natural or legal persons, entities or bodies listed is prohibited.

Iran categorically rejects the claims.

Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly warned that a flow of Western weapons to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the United States, alone, has provided more than $51.4 billion in military assistance to Kiev, the US State Department said in early July.

On May 14, 2024, the EU expanded its sanctions regime to target Iran’s missile capabilities. It said the sanctions came after Iran launched drone and missile attacks against Israel.

Furthermore, the Council prohibited the export of further components used in the development and production of UAVs from the EU to Iran.

On May 31, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said it has adopted restrictive measures against six Iranian individuals and four entities, claiming their role in transferring drones or missiles to armed groups and entities undermines peace and security in West Asia and the Red Sea region.
