Renewed clashes between police and protesters in Kenya have left one person dead in the east African country.

Media reports on Tuesday said at least one person was killed in the fresh anti-government protests across Kenya.

Anti-riot police were deployed in large numbers in Kenya’s capital, firing tear gas at several dozen protesters gathered in Nairobi’s city center.

Police clashed with demonstrators, killing one protester in the coastal city of Mombasa, Reuters reported.

20-year-old university student Emmanuel Giggs Tata reportedly suffocated after police fired teargas to disperse a crowd near Mwembe Tayari along Jomo Kenyatta Avenue in Mombasa on Tuesday evening. Tata’s family said he was heading home with his friends when he was caught in the running battles.

Earlier, thousands of young anti-government protesters had marched through the popular tourist destination.

Abu Dhabi-based newspaper Nation reported similar marches in at least 23 of Kenya’s 47 counties.

Continuous nationwide youth-led anti-government protests against President William Ruto broke out a month ago across Kenya over proposed tax hikes in the government’s 2024 Finance Bill.

The protests continued even after Ruto withdrew the legislation and dismissed almost all of his cabinet members.

The Tuesday protests appeared to be some of the biggest in the country since Ruto withdrew the tax increases on June 26.

The protesters, who are calling for systemic changes in the government, now want Ruto himself to resign.

The protest leaders say they aim to eradicate corruption in the government, while also addressing the issue of poor governance.

At least 50 people have been killed so far in the deadly clashes between police and protesters, according to the government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
