The director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza says the situation in the medical facility is “extremely dangerous and terrifying” against the backdrop of Israeli shelling.
Hussam Abu Safia said in a statement on Monday the hospital had been targeted by Israeli drones.
“This morning, drones dropped bombs in the hospital’s courtyards and on its roof,” the statement read.
“The shelling, which also destroyed nearby houses and buildings, did not stop throughout the night.”
He said Israeli shelling has caused extensive damage to the medical facility, including its intensive care unit, maternity ward and specialized surgery department.
“Bullets hit the intensive care unit, the maternity ward, and the specialized surgery department causing fear among patients.”
Abu Safia said the generator at the hospital is completely out of service and the fuel tank is also targeted.
He made the announcement following the latest Israeli attacks targeting Kamal Adwan Hospital.
Located in Beit Lahia, the hospital is one of only two still operational in northern Gaza. The area has been the focus of an intense air and ground campaign by Israeli forces since October 6.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Abu Safia called on the international community to intervene quickly and protect the healthcare system in Gaza before it’s too late.
“We face a constant threat every day. The shelling continues from all directions… The situation is extremely critical and requires urgent international intervention before it is too late,” he said.
“The world must understand that our hospital is being targeted with the intent to kill and forcibly displace the people inside.”
On Sunday, Abu Safia said he had received orders to evacuate the hospital.
Meanwhile, Gaza health officials said the Israeli army placed explosive-laden robots near the gate of the hospital.
“This is a flagrant violation of the international humanitarian law, as Article 18 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 stipulates the protection of civilian hospitals at all times, and prohibits their targeting or use for military purposes,” said Dr. Munir al-Borsh,
Director General of Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
Nearly 100 patients, currently hospitalized in Kamal Adwan Hospital, have been evacuated to the corridors.
Israeli forces have systematically targeted hospitals in the Gaza Strip as part of a plan to cripple the healthcare system in the besieged territory.
