An Israeli soldier is facing a legal case in Sweden for involvement in war crimes in Gaza, a pro-Palestine advocacy organization says.
“The complaint, filed with Swedish authorities, accuses [Boaz] Ben David of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possible acts of genocide during the recent military operations in Gaza,” the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) said in a statement on Thursday.
It added that the move comes amid growing international calls to hold perpetrators of grave crimes accountable and to ensure justice for victims of the ongoing Israeli regime’s genocide in Gaza.
The HRF noted that Ben David, who is a staff sergeant and sniper, is currently on a tourist visit to Sweden but may leave the country soon.
“Evidence submitted with the complaint to the National Unit Against International and Organized Crime in Sweden includes photographs, videos, and witness testimonies, corroborated by reports from international human rights organizations and reputable journalists,” it said.
The Belgium-based Hind Rajab Foundation has filed several complaints in various countries against Israeli forces who participated in the genocidal campaign in Gaza. It has also lodged a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against 1,000 Israeli soldiers.
The foundation is named after Hind Rajab, a symbol of Gaza’s suffering.
On January 29 last year, Hind had been traveling in a car with her uncle, his wife and their three children, fleeing fighting in the neighborhood of Tel Al-Hawa in Gaza City, when they came under Israeli fire.
On February 10, the bodies of Hind and her relatives were found lying in the car. Just meters away, a burned-out ambulance was found with the remains of the two paramedics who tried to save the girl.
Israel launched the genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023. The war has so far killed at least 46,006 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 109,378 others.
Last year, the ICC, based in The Hague, issued warrants for the arrest of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza.
