US President Donald Trump has planned to target the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides aid to Palestinians.
According to a White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Trump will sign an executive order on Tuesday that will pull the US out of the rights council.
The UNHRC is a Geneva-based agency tasked with defending and promoting human rights in countries around the world.
In past years, US officials have called the UN Human Rights Council a biased, “hypocritical and self-serving” agency.
The order will also cut future funding to UNRWA, the main agency providing relief to the Palestinians in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
Trump’s new order targeting the UN agencies coincides with Israeli Prime Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House.
The Israeli regime claims the schools run by UNRWA teach Palestinian students “anti-Semitism” and some of the UN agency’s employees are linked to “terror” groups, allowing them to use its buildings for anti-Israel operations.
An independent review by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna found that there was no evidence to back the Israeli accusations.
On the contrary, the review showed that the agency had done everything in its power to maintain its neutrality.
However, the Israeli regime’s baseless claims have led to a loss of vital international funding for UNRWA.
In the meantime, the US administration has been following up on Trump’s campaign trail promises, cutting all US aid to foreign countries.
Trump, a Republican, claims allocating US taxpayers’ money to foreign aid is against his so-called America First agenda.
He ordered a freeze on nearly all US foreign aid programs right after his inauguration in January.
