Swiss authorities have launched a criminal investigation into an Israeli war criminal currently based in the country, following a detailed complaint submitted by the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a legal activism organization.

The Swiss officials began the probe on Wednesday, following an earlier complaint by the HRF that addresses and challenges the Israeli regime’s impunity concerning war crimes and human rights violations across the Palestinian territories.

According to the body, the complaint brings forth extensive evidence linking the individual to a series of brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip.

The crimes include deliberate targeting of civilians, systematic destruction of homes and hospitals, forced displacement of innocent families, and a host of other grievous violations of the international law.

The probe comes following 15 straight months of a ferocious Israeli war of genocide against Gaza that has so far claimed way upwards of 47,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. A ceasefire agreement took effect in January in the hope of bringing and end to the military onslaught, but Tel Aviv keeps violating the agreement to deadly effects.

“For too long, Israeli forces have operated with reckless disregard for human life and international norms,” said HRF Chairman Dyab Abou Jahjah in an exclusive interview with The Cradle, an online news magazine.

“The sheer audacity of recording these crimes and broadcasting them on social media underscores a dangerous belief in impunity. Our fight is for justice and accountability for every life lost,” he added, referring to the perpetrators of the atrocities boasting about their deadly and destructive violations on social media.

“The HRF urges Swiss authorities to pursue this case with earnestness and vigor,” the organization, meanwhile, wrote in a post on X, former Twitter.

The investigation also follows a wave of criminal complaints against so-called “dual-national” Israeli forces who took part in the savage operations in Gaza, a campaign widely condemned by human rights groups and lawmakers alike.

The probe is a landmark step towards holding those responsible for the bloodshed to account, echoing global demands for justice.

The momentum against impunity continues as Swiss federal prosecutors have also confirmed they were reviewing multiple criminal complaints against Israeli president Isaac Herzog. These complaints, lodged during his visit to Davos, Switzerland, have included calls for arrest and prosecution over incitement to genocide and crimes against humanity.

In parallel, related political moves have taken shape in Europe. Lawmakers at the Parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium recently adopted a resolution at the commission level, officially recognizing the atrocities in Gaza as genocide and urging imposition of sanctions against the Israeli regime.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the regime’s former minister for military affairs Yoav Gallant over their orchestrating a campaign of starvation as a method of warfare, along with murder, persecution, and other inhumane measures committed during the relentless onslaught on Gaza.

Despite authorizing the probe, Swiss officials recently detained and subsequently deported the Electronic Intifada pro-Palestinian website’s executive director, Ali Abunimah, an incident that has further fueled outrage among those committed to exposing Israeli aggression.

Abunimah recounted his harrowing experience upon arrival in Switzerland, describing it as akin to “mugging,” noting that he was held without any formal charges.
