US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia have discussed the possibility of a ceasefire agreement on the Ukraine conflict.

Trump and Putin discussed the conflict in a phone call that lasted more than two hours on Tuesday.

Washington hoped its proposal would convince Moscow to accept a 30-day ceasefire agreement and then move towards a permanent peace deal.

White House chief of staff Dan Scavino said earlier that the call has been “going well.” Kirill Dmitriev, a Putin envoy, said that under the leadership of Trump and Putin the world had become a much safer place.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said before the call that Putin and Trump will discuss the ceasefire agreement, how to normalize relations between Russia and the US, and that they will speak “for as long as they deem necessary.”

Peskov said there is a “certain understanding” between the two leaders, based on a phone call they had on February 12 and on subsequent high-level contacts between the two countries.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has already agreed to the US-proposed ceasefire in Europe’s biggest conflict since World War Two.

Putin, who began his “especial operation” against Ukraine in February 2022, also said he supported Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire agreement but his forces continue to fight until several vital conditions are met.

The policy shift in the US since Trump has come to the office has made the traditional allies of the country in Europe worried about the future of the Continent.

Ukraine and his backers in European capitals have described Putin’s “especial operation” as an imperialist move and a land grab.

Putin, however, has been arguing that in response to years of military and political provocations by the US and Western European countries, Russia began the “especial operations.”

Russia has managed to gain control of a fifth of Ukraine and has been slowly advancing in the east for months.

Ukraine’s military, supported by the US and Western European countries, grapples with manpower shortages and tries to hold to a chunk of territory in western Russia.

Russia has demanded an end to the West’s military and political provocations on its borders and Ukraine’s permanent neutrality under any peace deal. Ukraine on the other hand has demanded Russia’s withdrawal from the captured lands and wants NATO membership.
