Iran has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a clear stance against threats to its nuclear facilities following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks threatening to bomb Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

The demand was made during a phone conversation between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on Tuesday.

Araghchi briefed Grossi on the latest diplomatic developments surrounding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and reiterated Iran’s commitment to cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.

The foreign minister emphasized that the agency must adopt a transparent position regarding the ongoing threats to Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Trump threatened that he could order military strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure if Tehran refused to make a new deal with Washington.

During his first term in office, Trump withdrew the United States from a previous agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and launched a maximum pressure campaign against the country.

Trump restored that policy after returning to the White House for a second term in January, but he has since signaled a willingness to make a new deal to replace the 2015 deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The US president wrote a letter to Iran last month, asking for negotiations to reach a new agreement and threatening military action if Tehran refused.

Iran has ruled out direct negotiations with the US under pressure and threats, citing Washington’s history of violating its international obligations.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that Iran had responded to Trump’s letter and that Tehran was ready to engage in indirect negotiations with Washington. The president added that US behavior would determine the course of the talks.

US intelligence agencies have warned that Israel may also launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure this year.

Recent assessments caution that such strikes could ignite a broader conflict that would engulf the entire region and put US military assets in grave danger.

Israel has been seeking to involve the United States in a confrontation with Iran, as US officials say it lacks the military capability to target Iran’s nuclear and missile programs alone.

In the phone call with the IAEA chief, Araghchi warned that Iran would take all necessary measures to safeguard its nuclear facilities in light of the persistent threats.

Grossi, in response, said he would engage with other parties to create a conducive environment for resolving the issues.

He also requested a visit to Iran, which was agreed upon in principle by Araghchi.
