Russia has called for “effective negotiable solutions” to resolve the dispute between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, denouncing Washington’s repeated threats of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
“The world is growing tired of the endless threats against Iran,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
“This fatigue is accompanied by a lack of understanding of why this issue, although it has already found a diplomatic solution that has been legally formalized, is constantly seen as a pretext for potential aggression.”
The Russian official was referring to threats by US President Donald Trump to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities if no deal is reached.
Iran and the United States are set to hold indirect talks in Oman on April 12.
Zakharova said bombing Iran would not lead to peace and expressed hope that the upcoming talks help avert a crisis.
“There is also a growing understanding that bombing will not pave the way to peace. There is a demand for effective negotiating solutions that would allow the situation to move away from the dangerous line.”
Zakharova also criticized the Western approach to Iran’s nuclear energy program, questioning whether they genuinely seek a resolution to the long-standing dispute.
“In general, the way our Western colleagues have behaved so far makes it doubtful that they have a genuine desire to resolve the tangle of these issues.”
“We hope that a reasonable approach will prevail and that they will be able to switch to a constructive, thoughtful conversation about possible parameters for negotiating solutions that would avoid a crisis.”
The Russian official said Tehran cannot be held responsible for the consequences of “illegal actions by those who, through their shortsightedness and erroneous forecasting, undermined agreements.”
During Trump’s first presidency in 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a deal that limited Iran’s nuclear activities, allowed for more inspections, and eased sanctions against the country.
Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called for a focus on diplomatic engagement rather than actions that could escalate tensions.
“Of course, like everyone else, we hear quite harsh rhetoric. Naturally, the Iranian authorities are taking the necessary preventive protective measures. All this leads to an increase in tension,” Peskov said.
“And, of course, we believe that in these conditions, the main thing is probably to concentrate on the news that speaks about the possibility of contacts, direct or indirect, it is not so important. Contacts and dialogue are always better than confrontational actions, which only lead to an escalation of tension.”
