Iran has strongly condemned a terror attack in the city of Mehrestan in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, which killed eight Pakistani nationals.

In a statement on Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the killing of innocent people was a criminal act in violation of all Islamic principles and humanitarian norms.

He added that Iran’s relevant security and judiciary bodies would spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this crime and bringing them to justice.

The Iranian spokesperson slammed all forms of terrorism and stressed the importance of confronting this “sinister phenomenon” at national and regional levels.

Baghaei voiced Iran’s readiness to strengthen cooperation and coordination in the battle against terrorism.

Eight Pakistani nationals were killed on Saturday after unknown armed terrorists barged into a workshop in the village of Hisabad Payeen in Mehrestan and opened fire.

The terrorist attack took place approximately 100 kilometers from the Pakistan-Iran border, inside Iranian territory.

Sources said the victims were residents of Bhawalpur district in southern Punjab.

The unknown attackers, who were more than a dozen, escaped from the scene after the terrorist attack.

A spokesman for the Balochistan National Army (BNA), a banned outfit, claimed responsibility for the incident through a statement issued to the media. However, AFP reported that militant group Jaish al-Adl also claimed responsibility for the attack.
