Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Mohsen Paknejad has arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
Paknejad started his two-day visit on Monday at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart.
He is scheduled to meet the Iraqi ministers of oil and electricity, in addition to the prime minister.
The two sides are scheduled to sign a memorandum of understanding in the oil sector and agreements on the supply of gas to Iraqi power plants.
Upon arrival, Paknejad paid tribute to the memorial site of General Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).
Soleimani, Muhandis and their companions were assassinated in a US drone strike near Baghdad’s International Airport on January 3, 2020.
Paknejad has expressed hope that the sides would finalize the issues discussed between the two countries in the past and sign agreements in the field of energy during his trip to Baghdad.
“We have very good interactions and relations with Iraq in various fields. Cooperation between the two countries, especially in the oil industry and the implementation of oil projects, is currently underway,” he explained.
In March, Paknejad and Iraq’s Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil discussed in Tehran the development of cooperation in the fields of oil, gas, petrochemicals and electricity.
