The United States believes that Ukraine might agree to cede approximately 20% of its territory to Russian forces as a potential component of a peace agreement with Moscow, according to a report.

A senior US official told The New York Post that as Kiev and Moscow continue internal negotiations regarding potential terms, any ceasefire agreement might include the deployment of European military forces to Ukraine as peacekeepers. However, the exact conditions for such a deployment have not yet been determined.

The key issue is what the security forces look like – we call them “resilience forces,” the source said.

There are ongoing talks about creating a dedicated peacekeeping mission, which would include a joint commission composed of representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and a neutral third country not aligned with NATO. The main goal of this commission would be to monitor and enforce compliance with the ceasefire agreement.

The unnamed American official said that the US might also participate, but not through deploying ground troops, rather as a “monetary force, along with a third party.”

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the proposed agreement may include a provision recognizing Crimea as part of Russia. However, this acknowledgment has met resistance from the Trump administration and past US presidents.

Last Friday, Trump warned that he might pull the United States out of ceasefire negotiations following months of talks with both parties.

“I will be giving you a full detail over the next three days,” Trump told reporters. “But we had very good meetings on Ukraine, Russia … We’ll see how that works.”

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised his supporters that he would rapidly end what he described as the “ridiculous” war in Ukraine. And, since taking office on January 20, he has been making pretentious efforts to end it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a joint proposal by the US and Ukraine for a full and unconditional ceasefire and has placed a number of conditions on any potential ceasefire.

Moscow has made a truce in the Black Sea conditional on the West lifting certain sanctions.
