Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Mohsen Paknejad

Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Mohsen Paknejad is in Moscow to take part in the 18th meeting of Iran-Russia joint economic commission.

Heading a delegation, Paknejad arrived in Moscow on Thursday to attend the meeting, which aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in various economic sectors.

The meeting is to be co-chaired by the Iranian petroleum minister and Russian Minister of Energy Sergei Tsivilev.

Paknejad was welcomed by Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali and Russian officials upon his arrival.

He is scheduled to meet Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and the energy minister.

The Iranian delegation will also make the necessary preparation to finalize the documents for cooperation with Russia in different fields, which will be signed by Paknejad and Tsivilevon on Friday.

Back in June 2024, Tehran and Moscow signed a major agreement for the supply of gas from Russia to Iran.

Russia has been facing an oversupply of natural gas since early 2022 when its exports to Europe came under sanctions because of the war in Ukraine.

Iran is the second largest gas producer in the world after Russia and has its own exports via pipelines to Turkey and Iraq.

At the end of his two-day visit to Baghdad on April 14, the Iranian petroleum minister and Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs Hayyan Abdul Ghani supervised the signing of a contract to convert flare gas from Iraqi oilfields into feedstock for petrochemical plants located near Iran’s border with the Arab country.
