The United States is set to sell Saudi Arabia arms worth well over $100 billion, according to a report.
Six sources with direct knowledge of the issue told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that the proposal was being scheduled for announcement during US President Donald Trump’s visit to the kingdom in May.
The proposed package comes after the previous US administration failed to finalize a defense pact with Riyadh as part of a broad agreement that entailed Saudi Arabia normalizing ties with Israel.
The Joe Biden administration offered Saudi Arabia access to more advanced US weaponry in return for halting Chinese arms acquisitions and curbing Beijing’s investment in the country.
In his first term, Trump celebrated weapons sales to Saudi Arabia as good for US jobs.
Trump signed a massive $110 billion arms deal with the Saudis during his maiden overseas trip to Riyadh in May 2017, boasting that it was going to make and save “billions of dollars and millions of jobs” in the US.
Besides fighter jets, warships and other weapons, the deal also included precision-guided munitions (PGMs), the sale of which was halted by US President Barack Obama over Riyadh’s war against Yemen.
The pact includes a $6 billion contract to assemble 150 Lockheed Martin Blackhawk helicopters in Saudi Arabia, an official statement about the deal said.
The deal also includes a $1 billion THAAD missile system and a contract for four multi-mission warships worth $11.5 billion, according to an unnamed official cited in the media.
Trump’s potential new deal with Saudi Arabia reportedly may include Lockheed’s F-35 jets, which the kingdom has reportedly been interested in for years.
The United States guarantees that its close ally Israel receives more advanced American weapons than Arab states, giving it what is labeled a “Qualitative Military Edge” (QME) over its neighbors.
Israel has now owned F-35s for nine years, building multiple squadrons.
