In November 2024, the Taklimakan Desert received a green belt – an ecological barrier spanning the entire 3,046 kilometers of its perimeter. Despite this milestone, Yutian County residents continue to further reinforce this barrier, recognizing that the desert’s fundamental behavior cannot be altered. Their approach follows the “letting sand be sand” philosophy: mitigating threats to human communities while preserving the desert’s natural ecology. At this frontier, roses, tamarisks, saxaul trees and cistanche flourish together as locals work to maintain the delicate balance between oasis and desert on a daily basis.
