As ASEAN chair in 2025, Malaysia convened a special ASEAN economic ministers’ meeting on April 10 to consider the new U.S. “reciprocal tariffs.” Up for discussion are the broader implications of U.S. tariffs on regional trade and investment flows, macro-economic stability and ASEAN’s coordinated response. ASEAN’s goal is to keep an open, fair and rules-based trading system. As some of the bloc’s member states were the hardest hit by U.S. tariffs, how could ASEAN ensure a stable and competitive hub for global trade and investment?
