During our reporting trip to Ukraine, many citizens expressed concerns about the country’s future, fearing that, three years on, the world might become increasingly indifferent to Ukraine’s plight, given its reliance on international allies. A recent survey conducted by the international polling agency Gallup in Ukraine shows that in contrast to three years ago, more than half of Ukrainians now hope to end the war through negotiations. However, many Ukrainians believe that NATO membership is crucial for ensuring the effectiveness of such negotiations. Yet, recent statements by the U.S. regarding Ukraine have cast doubt on the future of this path. While Ukrainians yearn for a ceasefire and an end to the war, the initiative in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict seems to lie beyond their control.
