The protagonist of the tale is a dark-skinned girl named Shyama, who aims to eradicate the shame associated with color. She marries Nikhil and experiences prejudice because of her skin tone. She embarks on a quest to forge her own identity as a gifted vocalist. Shyama thinks her skin tone is similar to Lord Krishna’s. Following her marriage, she pursues a career in music, which completely transforms her life. Although Shyama’s mother-in-law despises her, over the course of a few years, she grows to love her and even lets her sing.
