China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in November 2021 as they marked the 30th anniversary of dialogue relations. With the emphasis placed on people-to-people exchanges, how can both sides better foster a climate of mutual trust and understanding going forward? What role will the younger generation play in bringing China and ASEAN closer? In this edition of The Hub, CGTN’s Wang Guan is in Jakarta for the ASEAN-China Future Relations Forum and talks to some of the participants. Humprey Arnoldo Russel, director of the ASEAN–China Research Center at the University of Indonesia, says both sides need to stay true to the Bandung Spirit, as he praises China for its commitment to the prosperity and development of the ASEAN region. Tran Thuy Linh, a PhD candidate from Vietnam studying in Beijing and a recipient of the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship, believes that people-to-people exchanges are essential, and that language and culture play an irreplaceable role in bolstering relations between China and ASEAN countries. Brice Lee Tseen Fu, a Bruneian research analyst at the Oxford Global Society and ASEAN youth fellow at the National Youth Council of Singapore, calls for more academic and language interactions between China and ASEAN. “The more we talk, the more we understand each other,” he remarks.
