The European Union will impose counter-tariffs on 26 billion euros (about $28 billion) worth of U.S. goods starting next month, the European Commission announced on March 12. This move comes in response to blanket U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum.

CGTN hit the streets of the Spanish capital, Madrid, to gather the locals’ insights on the matter.

“The Americans have made a serious mistake, believing this would be a solution to their economic problems,” said an interviewee named Juan Allende. Another resident, named Nicolas, emphasized the long-term implications, stating that it would take a long time for the EU and the U.S. to rebuild trust. He also expressed hope that the EU would gain more autonomy.
