Recently, several Chinese mainland spouses in Taiwan had their residency permits revoked and were ordered to leave the island within a specified timeframe by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for publicly expressing “support for national reunification” online. One of them, a social media influencer known as Yaya, was ordered to leave Taiwan, separating her from her husband and three children, due to her online comments about cross-Straits relations. The DPP authorities accused her of “advocating reunification by force.”

CGTN Stringer spoke with a Chinese mainland spouse currently living in Taiwan to hear her perspective of the incident. She expressed sympathy for Yaya and her family and said the actions taken by the DPP authorities infringed on their freedom of speech. Out of fear of being expelled, she said, she dares not speak freely.
