The U.S. and the Philippines have launched 12 days of joint military drills aimed at enhancing “strategic deterrence” – a move widely seen as targeting China. The exercises follow U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit to Manila, where he spoke openly about “preparing for war.” Adding to these developments, Washington is set to sell F-16 fighter jets as part of a major arms package that also includes hundreds of medium-range air-to-air missiles. So, why is the U.S. ramping up tensions in the region? Could Washington’s militarization of the Philippines push the region closer to conflict? And how does this strategy threaten peace and stability in Asia?
Guests in this edition of Dialogue are Huang Jing, professor of Shanghai International Studies University; Victor Gao Zhikai, chair professor of Soochow University; Prof. Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, director and vice president for External Affairs of the Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute; and Benjamin Norton, founder and editor-in-chief of Geopolitical Economy Report.
