Famine in Sudan is imminent as the civil war nears its second year, pushing the country toward famine in the coming months.

A statement from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, released on Monday, appeals for desperately-needed aid.

The UN OCHA Sudan has warned at least 37 percent of the population at crisis level or above suffer from hunger.

Save the Children says about 230,000 children, pregnant women and newborn mothers could die of malnutrition in the coming months.

Food production and distribution networks have broken down and aid agencies are unable to reach the worst-stricken regions.

Nearly 9 million people have been forced to flee their homes either to safer areas inside Sudan or to neighboring countries, according to the United Nations.

Civil war in Sudan between the military, chaired by General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exploded into street clashes in the capital in mid-April 2023.
